I outsourced my working memory to a machine
This is not a story about forgetting things. It is a story about what becomes possible when you stop carrying everything yourself.
I process a lot. A complex enterprise deal in the morning, a code session at night, a home infrastructure project on the weekend. Each domain has its own context, its own open threads, its own next moves. For a long time I held all of it in my head. It worked, mostly. But holding it had a cost I was paying without noticing.
When something is not working, the first question is not how to try harder. It is what is wrong with the design.
So I designed around it. Not a productivity system. An architecture. A persistent layer that captures what I am thinking, surfaces what is relevant, and removes the friction between intention and action. The same architecture I later built for a team at work, at a different scale, for the same reasons. In both cases the goal was identical: stop spending human attention on things a system can hold better.
What changed was not capacity. What changed was where the capacity went. Attention that used to go into maintaining context became available for the work that actually needs a person. Pattern recognition. Judgment calls. The decisions that cannot be automated because they require knowing which question to ask.
The architecture matters more than the tools. What goes where. What the person holds, and what the system holds. Most people never make this explicit. They absorb the full load into their own heads and wonder why they feel overloaded.
I see the same problem in a kitchen. A recipe is not a list of ingredients. It is a set of decisions about what holds together, what interacts, what breaks the moment you change one thing without understanding its role. Same instinct, different room.
Every organisation I have worked in has people struggling with exactly this. Not because they are not capable. Because the system was never designed. Nobody told them they could engineer around it. Or they tried, and felt that needing scaffolding was the same as admitting failure.
It is not. The question is not whether you need support structures. Everyone does. The question is whether you build them deliberately or keep wondering why the load never gets lighter.
